The
Iowa Organizing Committee has announced plans for the second annual
international conference of the Jefferson Highway Association.
The
conference will be held at the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center, Ames, IA. on
April 27 and 28, 2012.
On Friday, April 27th, conference attendees will be able to
interact with several presenters on topics ranging from highway history to
present day tourism. Also on the
agenda will be the Association’s annual business meeting.
On Saturday, April 28, the conference will hit the road for a motor coach
tour of the northern half of the Jefferson Highway in Iowa.
The tour will make several stops, including the monolith at the
Iowa-Minnesota border, the recently restored Historic Park Inn in Mason City,
the Scenic City Motel and Princess Café in Iowa Falls, the Jefferson Highway
Farm near Hubbard and the Reed/Niland Corner in Colo.
The conference will conclude with an awards ceremony recognizing several
individuals for their efforts to promote this historic road.
The Jefferson Highway was the first transcontinental international
highway to traverse the North American continent from north to south.
Also known as the highway from ”Pine to Palm” the road runs from
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada through Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma,
Arkansas, Texas and Louisiana to New Orleans.
The Jefferson Highway Association was recently revived with the goal of
promoting the old route of the Jefferson Highway and to give historic highway
travelers and enthusiasts a great look at America, right down the middle.
